Prospect gun case goes to grand court

Man accused of having Colt .45 and ammunition without a licence

Joshua Alexander Brown, 24, elected on Tuesday to stand trial in grand court on charges he possessed unlicensed firearms.

Magistrate Nova Hall remanded him to custody until Friday, 30 September, when he is scheduled to appear in the higher court.

Brown is accused of having a Springfield Colt .45-calibre handgun and six rounds of .45 ammunition on 8 September at a residence in the area of Marina Drive in Prospect.

Before the short form inquiry took place to send the matter up, defence attorney Prathna Bodden said she would be applying for bail. Crown Counsel Candiah James said she would be objecting.

The magistrate said she would rather have the bail application made in grand court so the judge there would not feel obliged to have any regard for the summary court decision.

Ms Bodden then urged the matter be listed for 23 September so that the bail hearing could be held sooner. She was advised a week is needed to get all the papers ready.
