One of Cayman’s premier youth basketball competitions is starting back.
The Appleby Under-19 Basketball League is slated to start this Saturday, 24 September. The competition caters to both boys and girls with matches tentatively scheduled outdoors at the Cayman Islands Basketball Association court off Eastern Avenue.
In the boys division six teams are signed up in Bodden Town, Esso Blazers, Grand Pavilion Shockwaves, John Gray High School, Wesleyan Christian Academy and Wolves. The girls division features four squads in the Comets, Lynx, Monarchs and Sparks.
Focus this season will be on whether the Wolves and Sparks can orchestrate repeat championship runs. It’s not clear if hoops prodigy La-Torae Nixon will play for the Sparks this season. Her absence will open up the league and put added pressure on coach Wendy Manzanares and role players like Taylor Reid and Tisha Murillo.
Wolves head coach Duran ‘Trini’ Whittaker is a master motivator and had talented players like Peter Grant and Neith Rhinegold. Time will tell if Trini can out-duel other basketball minds like Jonathan Powery of the Shockwaves and Shawn Pitterson of Esso.
Games this Saturday take place in the evening. The Sparks face the Comets at 5pm, Lynx take on Monarchs at 6.30pm and Blazers battle Wesleyan at 8pm.
