Travelling and the Cayman Race Season

Over the past few weeks more than a handful of friends and co-workers have travelled off island for numerous reasons including back to school shopping, business meetings and visiting family and friends back home. For many people these holidays or interruptions from their daily routine are accompanied by a complete disruption of their exercise regime and while it may not be possible to maintain your regular routine I thought I’d provide a few tips to keep up with your preparations for this year’s Intertrust Cayman Marathon while you are away from home.

If you truly want to exercise while you are away from home be sure to pack the necessary equipment. Many people don’t even pack exercise clothing because they figure they won’t have time in their busy schedule or because they want to optimise luggage space. I would hope by now you are starting to realize we always seem to find time for the top priorities in our life (Is good health one of your priorities?) and packing a pair of shorts and a T-shirt certainly isn’t going to put you over the airlines restrictive weight limits. You can always wear your runners to the airport and then you’ll be prepared when a thirty minute window opens up during your travels.

In the past when I’ve had the opportunity to travel for business I always tried to book a hotel with a fitness centre. The fitness centre may not have all the equipment and gimmicks of your friendly gym on island but many hotels now have an adequately equipped fitness centre, which usually includes a treadmill or two. These in house fitness centres are conveniently located only a few floors from your room and are the perfect place to kick start a busy day or relieve some stress after a long one.

One of my favourite activities to do while travelling to a new city is a run-about. The run-about is the perfect way to explore a city and get some exercise at the same time. In fact, the last few times I’ve travelled I even managed to entice Lauren (my girlfriend) to join me and we’ve made a great day of it. Basically we dress as though we were going to head out for a run but make sure to bring our bank card or credit card, a few dollars in cash, a piece of id (i.e. drivers license) and a map. You might want to bring a camera. Once dressed for our run-about we then head to explore the city. Sometimes we have an action plan of places we want to see and things we want to do. Other times we set off with no plan at all. We normally start off running at a casual talking pace and during our journey if we decide we want to stop to shop, or eat/drink or check out a site we do. If we want to walk no problem. Our goal isn’t to run 100 miles at a record pace but rather to get some exercise while experiencing something new. If you are concerned about spending the day in your sweaty clothing just remember not everywhere in the world is as warm a Cayman and when you’re in new city no one knows you name. I can personally attest it’s a great way to see a city, get some exercise and enjoy quality time with friends and/or family.

This Saturday marks the final week in the Fidelity 2 mile fun run series and if you didn’t make the first two legs don’t worry. The event is still accepting entrants for the final leg. Start time is 7.30am in front of John Gray High School. Here in Cayman we are now in race season with numerous events held between now and the 4 December Intertrust Cayman Marathon. These events, while likely shorter than your December event, provide a perfect opportunity to psychologically prepare for it and the completion of them is perfect for building confidence in the lead up. Cayman Active keeps a calendar of all the upcoming events on island and hopefully I’ll see you at one of the events in the near future.

Your health is of the utmost importance and not to be neglected. Even though moderate physical activity, such as brisk walking, is safe for most people, health experts suggest that you talk to your doctor before you start any exercise program.
