Canteloupes safe from listeria

One thing residents need not worry about is whether the canteloupe melons they purhcase here may be contaminated with listeria.

The major grocery stores Fosters, Kirk’s and Hurley’s have all confirmed that the contaloupe melons they sell do not originate from Jensen Farms in Holly, Colorado, where the listeria outbreak was traced back to.

Up to 60 people in 16 states have been infected by the listeria outbreak and so far ten have died from the disease.

Although Jensen Farms recalled the Rock Ford Cantaloupe melons on September 14, health officials say it can take up to two months before a person who ate listeria-contaminated food comes down with listeriosis. Listeriosis is a serious infection that primarily affects the elderly, pregnant women, newborns and adults with weakened immune systems.

Fortunately for Cayman residents, all canteloupe melons sold here come from other parts of the US or beyond and are not affected by this outbreak.
