Local dominoes is looking to get its national competition going again.
The Cayman Islands Dominoes Association is set to start its 2011-2012 national league. To that end, the group is hosting a meeting on Thursday, 29 September, aimed at current and prospective team captains.
Island All Stars is one of the stalwarts of the sport on Island. Its president Derrick Elliott Senior is a former head of the association and spoke about the intentions for Thursday’s gathering.
“The meeting is taking place at Mango Tree at 7pm,” Elliott Senior said. “It’s informal and all the representatives from all of the teams are invited. The season is slated to start early next month. We might see eight to 12 teams this season with a few new ones coming through.
“At this point it seems there will be two clubs out of East End, seven out of George Town and two in West Bay.”
News of the meeting comes after Island All Stars hosted a Floridian team over the weekend. A number of teams had players present for the mini-tournament at Mango Tree. Elliott Senior, who saw the competition as a source of practice and exposure for the local clubs, states his club feels ready for the new campaign.
“It will be an exciting season. Definitely we’re looking to improve. We had a little setback last year (Island All Stars finished tied for second with team Archies, behind undefeated winners East End All Stars). But our team is one of the most experienced teams on Island. I’m looking to carry the team to a championship run.”
