Leon Dilbert should be all the rage in local fishing circles.
That is because he caught a 38.6 pound wahoo during last weekend’s All-Tackle fishing tournament. As a result Dilbert would walk away with a cool $2,000 and an additional prize for the heaviest wahoo caught.
Dilbert, fishing aboard Miss Nyha with Joel Francis, had stiff competition. Nabbing second place and $1,000 was Vaughan Smith of Miss Nicole for a 32.8lb wahoo. Shelly Ware, aboard Run Things, was third with a 32.3lb catch.
Ware though would end up with a number of prizes. For starters she took home $2,000 for the heaviest dolphin at 28.4lbs. She also earned Carey Chen artwork for the heaviest fish caught by a female angler and being on the boat with the lone billfish release of the tournament. Her only competition for the female award was Samara Persaud (who caught a 21.8lb dolphin aboard Morning Spirit) and Melissa Rewalt (who landed a 14.5 dolphin aboard Bahari).
In the dolphin category Ware was followed by Leon Dilbert, who took home an extra $1,000 for the second heaviest fish at 26.2lbs. In third was Andrew Schirn of Deep Thought with a 24lb catch. Schirn would claim the junior angler prize of a rod and reel combo.
All of the top anglers received their prizes on Tuesday night at an awards ceremony in the Grand Pavilion courtyard. On hand for the presentations was George Poveromo, a noted fishing enthusiast in the US who is in Cayman filming local angling for a TV show that will appear on Versus sports channel (which will be called the NBC Sports Network next year).
The All-Tackle tournament is the last competition by the Cayman Islands Angling Club for 2011. The next event is in January 2012, in the form of the Barcadere Classic.
