The Vivian Rankine memorial darts tournament has had support from a number of community members, including LIME.
The telecommunications company have been chief sponsor for each of the competition’s last 12 years. Though the event is slated to end in 2012, LIME country manager Anthony Ritch states they are intent to back the tournament.
“It’s a great and worthwhile event for LIME to participate in,” Ritch said. “It’s fantastic, the level of enthusiasm makes it a special event. Personally, I know the family and it’s great to see Vivian has left a legacy.
“We, as a company, feel this tournament is a strong part of the community. We are proud of our partnership, which has been built up over the years.”
The purpose of the competition was to raise funds for Vivian’s son George Bodden to attend college. George, 17, is set to go to Hawaii to study marine biology. Tournament organizer Martin Bodden states the plan next year is to send George (who has thrown the first few darts of the competition in recent years) off with a bang.
“We got one more year to do it again,” Bodden said. “We want to give George a nice send-off to college. In its final year the tournament should go out with a bang. We’ll keep the same format over two days. We’ll be hoping for more next year as it will be the last one. We’re trying to start and build interest for it from now.
“We’re grateful for Anthony Ritch and LIME. The shirts and much of the prizes are compliments of LIME. Their sponsorship is appreciated and they will be there to the end.”
The 2011 Vivian Rankine tournament saw Filipino star Mel Tagalog emerge singles A division and overall champion for the second straight year. Runner-up was countryman was Eugene Deguzman, who claimed the singles B division title. The other winners were Rodan Asuncion and Edwin Andrade (doubles A division), Paul Anglin and Norrin Stewart (doubles B division) and overall women’s champion Carol Johnson.
