Co-ed softball witnessed an incredible extra innings thriller last week.
The Cayman Islands Little League Adult Co-ed Softball League saw its A division up for grabs between the PWC Legion of Boom and KM Ltd. It was a back and forth brawl between the group’s top two teams at the Field of Dreams in George Town.
It took the eighth and final inning for KM Ltd to emerge victorious. The game ended in regulation with the score tied 14-14. In the top half of the eighth, with KM down to their last out, an unlikely hero emerged. Using every once of his 5’5 150 pound frame, Ramon Martinez blasted a rope down first base line for a three-run homer in what turned out to be the game-deciding score.
It was not easy from there as the bottom of eighth saw PWC’s possible winning run come to the plate. Down two runs with base runners at second and third, the PWC batter ripped a shot headed for the right centre gap when KM second baseman Diana Wells made an amazing leaping grab for final out of the game, sealing the championship for her team.
The final started well for KM with a three-run homer off the bat of Yarian Powery in the first. Denis Martinez’ solo homer in the second gave KM a 4-0 lead. PWC responded with three runs in the third and four more in the fifth to take a three-run lead. The bats exploded for both teams in the final two innings of regulation. KM’s fire power came from the aforementioned Martinez brothers and Powery along with Samantha McField, Norlan Duarte, Brent McComb, Robert Winans, David Nielsen and Dale Stoudt.
The victory is the first A division championship for KM, who had reached the title game several times in past seasons but could never close the deal.
