East End and West Bay once again battle to decide who is better at volleyball.
The two districts will field select teams to play exhibition contests this weekend. The East End Civic Centre will be the site of the action this Saturday 4 June 6pm-9.30pm. The games will feature at least one youth and one adult team from each district.
The event is being put on by the West Bay and East End Community Sports Committee, which recently wrapped up district volleyball leagues in both locales. West Bay crowned two champions in the Young Blazers for the youth segment and Above the Net for the adults.
Young Blazers, guided by sportsman Tevin Yen, needed three sets to down the Steelers 15-10, 14-16 and 15-5. Quinton Ebanks, 14, was part of the winning team and states the competition kept him from being idle.
“It was good and it was pretty hard for us to come back and win,” Ebanks said. “Being a part of this makes me happy. If I wasn’t out here I’d probably be at my cousin’s house playing video games.”
On the Adult side Above the Net featured basketball players like Nicholas Roberts and Nigel Ebanks and was assembled by Director of Sports Collin Anglin. They became the first team in the brief history of community volleyball to win two consecutive titles. Basketball prodigy Jarrett Terry, 19, states the championship is meaningful.
“For me it was extra sweet because last year me and Kim Rivers were on a different team and we came up just short,” Terry said. “We were drafted by Collin into the team and luckily it worked out for us. Once we got our heads in the game we pulled out the victory.”
Over in East End the youth champions were Bikers with 142 points. US Again were the adult winners with 278 points. The competition featured dozens of notable players such as Anthony Bodden, John McLean Jr and Curtis Welcome. East End Sports Committee member Vernie Watler-Harris states the competition was good for residents.
“I think it went very well,” Watler-Harris said. “Doing the community sports gives everyone an opportunity to know a person better than before because of the interaction. It was well received and a lot of people enjoy the sport of volleyball. In fact they want to keep their passion going.”
