Cayman will field a little over 90 athletes, covering ten sports, at the Island Games in the Isle of Wight in the United Kingdom from Saturday.
This is the largest multi-sports Games Cayman will have sent such a big team. The swimmers and track sprinters are the most likely to get medals.
Carl Brown is one of the heads of the delegation. Marathon swimmer Victor Thompson will head the delegation. Brown said: “Our past performances at the Games are a proud foundation on which to plan for confident Cayman out come.
“The closing ceremonies should promise a respectable country ranking. We intend to stake out podium positions for gold while setting our sights on a few for the record books. If you don’t dream you can’t have one come true.
“We have a legacy of stellar performances, securing 26 medals, on average, at each Island Games since Gotland in 1999 (six Games in total). The Games have been a rite of passage for emerging Cayman elite athletes. Olympians Shaune and Brett Fraser, Ronald Forbes, Commonwealth gold medallist, and Olympian, Cydonie Mothersill are a few Island Games graduates who have blazed trails to world rankings on Cayman’s behalf.
We are amongst the smallest populations represented in the games designed for countries with 125,000 and less. Cayman has no problem living out a tradition of defying the odds, breaking the mould, and raising the bar.”
