Rising Stars host JA Baptists

Local netball continues to strengthen its ties with counterparts in Jamaica.

At the end of May the Cayman Islands Netball Association hosted the Stella Maris Dance Ensemble. Now one of Cayman’s most respected netball teams is slated to face a top club from the ackee-loving nation.

Rising Stars netball club is expected to host Boulevard Baptist side in roughly two weeks on the weekend of 15-17 July. Boulevard Baptist is part of the Jamaica Netball Association and won that group’s C division this year. The club is scheduled to be here as part of summer series with games taking place at the University College of the Cayman Islands.

A number of other Cayman squads are slated to take part including Maples and Calder, the 2010 mixed league champion Frank Hall Home Blazers and the 2011 national champions Roma. News of the competition comes after the Rising Stars team travelled to New York over the weekend to take part in the US Netball Association national championships.

Rising Stars club manager Orvin Palacio states the impending tournament is about improving local netball.

“We participated in the club division of the championships and took 12 players (including two Under-14 players), managers, coaches and chaperones,” Palacio said. “It is hoped that the upcoming event will be an opportunity for teams to have some regional exposure as well as post-season and preseason practice.”
