The University College of the Cayman Islands has transitioned to online learning after one student tested positive for COVID-19.
In a statement issued on Friday 12 Nov., a spokesperson for UCCI said the university decide to shift to online learning to limit the spread of COVID-19 throughout the institution due to a lack of an adequate supply of lateral flow tests.
“Because of COVID-19 community spread, students were given the choice to attend fall semester courses either in-person or online,” reads the statement. “Many chose the latter and instructors have been teaching a hybrid of the two. The shift to fully online will be seamless.”
According to statement issued on behalf of the Ministry of Health on Friday 12 Nov., some 1,708 PCR tests were conducted in Cayman between Thursday 9 Nov., and Friday 12 Nov. Of those, 265 positive cases were identified, 264 of which were from the community.
UCCI has not confirmed when in-person classes will resume.
“UCCI is eager to have students return to classroom learning as soon as it is safe to do so,” reads the statement.
“The situation will be continually and carefully evaluated and any necessary changes in instruction protocols will be made when it is appropriate to do so.”
