Luke Higgo now holds the fastest time in Cayman Islands Aquatic Sports Association history for the 100-metre backstroke in the 11-12 age group.
Higgo, 12, finished in 1:07.42 seconds during the 2021 Coconut Cup meet, held at the Camana Bay Aquatic Centre on 3-5 Dec. His time bested Olympian Andrew MacKay’s 1:08.71 seconds for the same age group, which had been the record since 1998.
“My plan was to swim as fast as I could and to try and get a personal best time,” Higgo said in a Camana Bay Aquatic Club press release. “To not only get a PB but also set a [CIASA] record is awesome.”
His time also qualified him for next year’s CARIFTA Aquatics Championships. CBAC’s head coach Grant Ferguson said the athlete’s hard work is now paying off.
“It’s a credit to our athletes and the hard work and training they put in,” he said. “The meet was run efficiently and was really enjoyable. Our thanks to CIASA, the officials, volunteers and sponsors,” Ferguson said.
