Education Minister Juliana O’Connor-Connolly has been discharged from hospital after spending almost a week under medical care since testing positive for COVID-19.
The Cayman Brac East MP’s release was confirmed on Tuesday by the ministry after several queries from the Cayman Compass seeking an update on O’Connor-Connolly since last week.
The ministry, in a brief statement, said O’Connor-Connolly was discharged from the hospital on Tuesday, 25 Jan., and is recuperating at home.
“The Minister is in good spirits and wishes to thank the staff at the Cayman Islands Hospital for the excellent care she received during her stay. She also thanks the public for their prayers and best wishes,” the statement added.
On 17 Jan. Premier Wayne Panton confirmed the education minister had tested positive for COVID-19 and was in isolation.
Shortly after that announcement, the premier, through a statement, reported that O’Connor-Connolly had to be airlifted from Faith Hospital on Cayman Brac to the Cayman Islands Hospital for observation and treatment.
She was taken to the hospital on Grand Cayman after being transported by the police helicopter on 20 Jan.
The minister was among the last members of the PACT government to get vaccinated, which she announced during a press conference last August.
O’Connor-Connolly and East End MP Isaac Rankine were the only two government MPs to publicly confirm positive COVID-19 results.
On 21 Jan., David Wight, Opposition Progressives MP for George Town West, also confirmed he and his twin brother, Christopher Wight, had tested positive and were in isolation.
As of Monday night, Cayman’s active cases stood at 5,708 with 18 people hospitalised, two of whom were newly admitted.
Public Health reported in its latest figures that, from 27-29 Jan, 580 positive cases were recorded.
The Sister Islands added 22 new cases since the last report on Friday, taking active cases there to 67.

Glad to hear she is recovering.
What was her vaccination status at the time? Single, double or triple vaccinated?
This is a public interest question as substantial public funds were spent on a helicopter ride from the Brac to Grand Cayman.
