The Cayman Islands women’s national football team played their final match of the CONCACAF W Championship World Cup qualifiers on Saturday, 9 April, losing 9-0 to neighbouring Jamaica.
“We knew the reality that we were facing,” Cayman’s assistant coach, Cláudio Garcia, said after the match.
“We analysed Jamaica, we saw their strengths but we also found some weaknesses. The thing is, when we play against a team like this, some of the mistakes that we made, especially in the first 15 minutes, we paid very hard.”
Hundreds of fans in attendance at Truman Bodden Sports Complex witnessed Jamaica’s dominance over the home team throughout the match, with Reggae Girls registering five goals in the first 20 minutes.
Jamaica’s Trudi Carter scored a hat-rick (7th, 16th and 17th); Tamoy Phillips netted an own goal in the 12th and Jody Brown scored in the 14th minute.
The visitors then registered another four goals in the second half. Khadija Shaw scored three times in 11 minutes (54th, 56th and 65th).
Kayla McCoy scored the final goal in the 88th minute.

Garcia said that while his team did not produce the result they were looking for, it was a learning lesson against a team that competed in the previous World Cup.
