Dorlisa Ebanks, mother of murdered 4-year-old Jeremiah Barnes, has renewed her call for the community to take a stand against gun violence as her family gets set to stage a special fun day in honour of her son.
Barnes was killed on 15 Feb., 2010, during a botched assassination attempt on his father, Andy Barnes. Ebanks, who was with her son and husband during the attack, was also wounded.
In the aftermath of his murder, Ebanks founded the support group Against All Violence In Cayman which will be staging its 11th fun day on 23 April at Airport Park starting at 2:30pm.
“We are all for promoting a non-violent society and keeping our islands safe for everyone to live in peace and harmony whilst remembering the short lived life of baby Jerri. We stand together against gun violence especially as it has taken so many of our children. We represent not only Jeremiah but all gun victims,” she said.
The murder of Jeremiah and the attempted murder of his family remains an open case, even though more than a decade has passed.
Ebanks said the group AAVIC was founded by a group of mothers in 2010 after the killing of Barnes as a support group for her.
“Fun days are just the beginning of the dream/vision for AAVIC. We will not turn a blind eye to violence and continue to let it cripple our society,” she said.
The event is free to the public and will feature guest speakers, prizes, games and a bouncy castle.
Ebanks added that the event would not be possible without corporate sponsors including Foster’s, Cost-U-Less, Book Nook, Atlantic, Casanova Restaurant, Hollywood theatres, Party Source among others.
Ebanks’s case is one of several cold cases, some of which have been highlighted in the Compass Cold Case Files series, that is being pursued by the RCIPS Serious Crime Review team.
