Anglers turned out in numbers to register for the 25th annual Cayman Islands International Fishing Tournament on Tuesday, 26 April, at the George Town Yacht Club.
“I think this tournament is going to show the resiliency of our fisherman,” Frank Thompson, president of Cayman Islands Angling Club, told the Cayman Compass. “Everyone is eager to get back to fishing; thankfully, some of the guys are getting back to work these days.”
The tournament, which runs from 29 April to 1 May, features 150 anglers aboard 38 respective boats, including several overseas competitors, according to Thompson.
“There is over $100,000 in cash and prizes up for grabs…and the guys are here in full force again [to register], showing their support for a sport that they love,” he said. “We have some international participants, which have flown in. In respect to COVID and travel restrictions, we didn’t have enough time to get the word out to a few international boats, where the owners would come by boat to participate.”
Despite the recent wave of rainy weather, Thompson said he expects the conditions to be favourable.
“Based on the current forecast, the weather is going to get better. [But] the fisherman realise, that it is fishing and we cannot control the weather.”
Weigh-ins start at 4:30pm each day, stationed at the George Town Yacht Club.
