Matheo Capasso will be taking his sailing and academics to the next level when he begins his freshman year at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana, this August.
“I’m very excited to be heading to university,” Capasso told the Cayman Compass. “I think it’s a great opportunity, where I can take advantage of the sailing facilities … [and] strengthen my skills.”
Capasso, 17, is currently finishing up his final year at the Cayman Islands International School. He has secured wins for Cayman at several international regattas, including the 2021 US Laser Nationals and the 2021 Laser Midwinters West Regatta.
Despite his experience against some of the world’s elite, Capasso said he anticipates being tested once he begins his NCAA Division I collegiate career.
“I’m expecting the sailing to be a bit more difficult than it is right now for me because I have to transition boats,” he said. “Currently I sail an ILCA 6, but at college, they sail what’s called a C420 and that’s a two-person boat.”
When asked what the process was like to select a school, Capasso stated, “I am a Caribbean boy, so I didn’t want to go anywhere too cold,” while mentioning sailing and his major studies as main priorities.
He will begin his freshman year, studying engineering, in August.
