Cayman set for 2022 netball open championships in Europe

The Cayman Islands netball national team is set to compete at the 2022 Netball Europe Open Championships, which will take place in the Isle of Man on 12‑15 May.

The championships will mark the first time since 2019 that Cayman has competed in an international competition after cancellations in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It is an exciting time for us,” Lyneth Monteith, head coach for Cayman national netball team, told the Compass. “We are grateful to be able to participate in this type of tournament, because it gives us a different feel.”

Cayman is currently ranked 26th in the World Netball Rankings. They will face off against the Isle of Man, Gibraltar and Switzerland in Group A of the championships.

The tournament has been split into two groups, with the top two teams from each group advancing to play in the semi-finals and then the finals, respectively.

  1. A wonderful opportunity for our netball team to expand their horizons. We seem to be ranked just behind the home team and ahead of Gibraltar and Switzerland, so we have a good chance of advancing.
