After playing to a 1-1 draw at the end of 90 minutes of regulation time, Elite SC beat Fusion in the ensuing penalty shootout to advance to the Cayman Islands Football Association women’s FA Cup semifinals.
The match, held at the Ed Bush Stadium on Wednesday, 4 May, served as only preliminary match for the prestigious tournament, with the other three teams receiving a bye, according to the CIFA FA Cup draw.
Fusion’s Liana Williams put her team ahead 1-0, 40 minutes into the match. Elite’s Ethana Villalobos answered in the 74th minute, which ultimately led to the shootout that ended 5-4 in favour of Elite.
“It isn’t an easy task,” Elite’s head coach Martha Godet told the Cayman Compass after the match. “Thank God that the outcome was on our side. I am so proud of them.”
Elite will now face off against 2021-22 President’s Cup champions’ Sunset FC in the first semifinal match on Wednesday, 11 May, at Ed Bush.
Of the upcoming match, Godet said, “It is going to be a tough game. Sunset is a very good team with young players, under 20 players, that also play on the national team. So, it will be a challenge for us, but we are ready.”
The second semifinal clash will feature Latinos taking on Scholars ISC at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex, also on Wednesday. Both games begin at 7:30pm.
