Cayman Cycling national athlete Nathaniel Forbes returned home from last month’s Pan American Cycling Championships, held in San Juan, Argentina, after a crash led him to completing only 64 of the race’s 120 miles.

According to a Cayman Cycling press release, Forbes, 19, was descending from a mountain in the racecourse, moving at speeds in excess of 56 miles per hour when a rider in front caused a crash that ultimately brought him down.

“His bike bore the brunt of the impact, a fact that probably saved him from serious injury,” Daniel Cummings, Cayman Cycling president, said. “Although a broken derailleur and a cracked frame ended his journey, his performance proved he will undoubtably continue to be an exciting talent to represent Cayman Cycling in the region and beyond.”

Since returning home, Forbes has received a new Argon 18 road bike, a donation from Tricor Group. Cayman Cycling also replaced his helmet, shoes, bike computer and glasses, which were all damaged in the crash.

Forbes is expected to represent Cayman again at the first edition of the 2022 Cycling Caribbean Games in Guadeloupe, scheduled for 27 June to 4 July.
