Former prison officer Arnold Geovanny Cabrera Diaz is expected to admit to attempting to smuggle ganja into Northward prison in the coming weeks; this after his attorney asked the matter to be adjourned for the seventh time to finalise ongoing discussions.

“I can tell your Honour this, guilty pleas are coming, it is just a matter of which charges,” said Amelia Fosuhene, who represents Cabrera Diaz.

He faces two counts of smuggling contraband, two counts of possession of ganja and two counts of possession of ganja with intent to supply. He also faces one count of breach of trust by a public officer and one count of giving a false address to a police officer, for a total of eight charges.

“A number of meetings were due to take place in relation to this matter,” said Fosuhene. “One such meeting took place last week, another such meeting is required, and for this reason I am seeking a further adjournment.”

It has been more than nine months since Cabrera Diaz was first charged in the matter, and  it has been adjourned multiple times.

In putting off the matter until 14 June, Magistrate Kirsty-Ann Gunn said, “This has been going on since February, and has had multiple adjournments. It needs to progress to the next stage.”

Cabrera Diaz was released on bail.

If he does plead guilty, Cabrera Diaz will be the second former prison officer to have admitted to smuggling ganja into Northward. Rudolph Rambaran previously admitted to trying to smuggle multiple packages of ganja weighing approximately 1 pound, into the prison.
