Don’t be surprised if you find yourself ordering coffee next to a Hollywood celebrity, or seeing them enjoying a local meal across a crowded room.
In the last few months, the likes of Don Johnson, Dennis Quaid, Josh Hutcherson, Isabelle Fuhrman, David Thewlis and Kiera Allen have been working onsite in Cayman with a mix of international and local crews.
‘Unit 234’
In April, Johnson and Fuhrman filmed scenes for ‘Unit 234’. Written by Derek Steiner (‘The Divergent Series: Insurgent’, ‘Beauty and the Beast (2017)’) and directed by Andy Tennant (‘Fool’s Gold’, ‘Hitch’, ‘Sweet Home Alabama’), the plot focusses on a lone employee (Fuhrman) at a remote storage facility who discovers an unconscious man locked inside Unit 234, chained to a gurney and missing a kidney. She must then fight to survive a ruthless gang, dead set on retrieving their precious cargo… at any cost.
The film is being produced by Blythe Frank, Hadeel Reda, Lee Dreyfuss and Productivity Media’s William Santor and Doug Murray. Johnson, Colleen Camp and Radiant Films International founder Mimi Steinbauer are serving as executive producers.
‘Littlemouth’
Quaid, Hutcherson, Fuhrman, Thewlis and Allen are filming sci-fi mystery ‘Littlemouth’ in Cayman. Jonathan Sobol (‘The Padre’) wrote the script and is directing for Productivity Media and Darius Films.
The film, set in the present day, follows a brilliant computer scientist (Fuhrman) who is recruited by a charismatic tech billionaire (Quaid) to work on a secret project that might just change humanity’s place in the universe forever, though it comes at great risk. Nicholas Tabarrok (‘Defendor’, ‘Stockholm’) is producing alongside Productivity Media’s William G. Santor (‘Four Good Days’) and Doug Murray (‘Unplugging’).
Local opportunities
Hollywood productions being filmed in Cayman have created amazing opportunities for local talent to work on professional sets.
When Productivity Media, Darius Films and Balcony 9 agreed to a multi-picture deal in 2021, suddenly people like Tremayne Ebanks, Badir Awe, Steff McDermot and Michael Pearson got the chance to sign up and be a part of the crew.
Some had significant previous experience, while others were just keen to learn the ropes. This also applied to a large number of Caymanians who registered as extras, and people like Ronnie James Hughes, who realised his dream of being an actor in a major film.
Hopefully, there will be more projects in the future, giving others the chance to join in and experience what it’s truly like to make movie magic.
