A team of 21 Caymanian athletes across six different sports will travel to Birmingham, England, later this month to compete at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Team Cayman Islands will feature athletes in athletics, boxing, cycling, gymnastics, squash and swimming.

“We are excited for the team heading to the Commonwealth Games,” Cayman Islands Olympic Committee Chef de Mission Janet Sairsingh told the Compass. “We have a relatively young team going, [for] many of which, this is their first Commonwealth Games.”

Among those representing Cayman will be several former Commonwealth Games competitors and Olympians, like Marlene West, who has competed in squash at five different Commonwealth Games.

Teammate and athletics Olympian Kemar Hyman also has a pair of previous Commonwealth appearances.

Athletes like Sierrah Broadbelt, who is the youngest competitor on Team Cayman, will be swimming in the 50 and 100 metres freestyle events.

The 13-year-old recently competed in the Central American and Caribbean Amateur Swimming Confederation Swimming and Open Water Championships, where she secured a gold medal.

Another standout athlete representing Cayman is Caribbean Games gold medalist Rasheem Brown. He is the only one on the team with a qualifying time.

He ran 13.53 seconds in the 110 hurdles during the Big South Outdoor Championships in May, which was .9 seconds faster than the qualifying mark.

With the games just two weeks away, Sairsingh said she is confident in the athletes’ training and preparation for the Games.

“We are looking forward to seeing them compete in their respective sports,” she said.
