Mason secures first place at Euroformula Open
Cayman Islands racer Josh Mason competed at the Euroformula Open at Hungaroring in Mogyoród, Hungary, where he claimed first place during race two with a seven-second lead on 9 July.
“I knew that the car was good and that I had a chance to win if things would run smoothly,” Mason told the Compass in an email. “I was able to take the lead quite early in the first lap. It was a matter of not [making] mistakes, focusing on my lines and pulling away.”
Cayman taking part in 21st Maccabiah Games
Gymnasts Miriam Schwabe and Alex Cohen, who train out of Motions Unlimited, are representing the Cayman Islands at the 21st Maccabiah Games in Israel, from 12-26 July.
The games are an international Jewish and Israeli multi-sport event held once every four years in Israel, which attract some 10,000 athletes from 60 countries.
“We feel fortunate to have the Cayman Islands represented at the Maccabiah Games,” Rabbi Berel Pewzner of the Chabad Cayman Jewish Community Center told the Compass. “We are so grateful for their hard work and dedication and [are] proud of their accomplishments.”
Junior squashers competing at Caribbean Championships
A team of nine youth athletes are currently representing the Cayman Islands at the Junior Caribbean Squash Championships held in Georgetown, Guyana, from 10-16 July.
The Cayman team consist of six boys and three girls participating in team and individual championships.
Wight wins second summer golf event
Caymanian golfer Payten Wight won the second event in the inaugural Grant Thornton Summer Series on Sunday, 3 July, at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club.
After four rounds of the knockout format match play, Wight finished with a three and two victory against Giles Hobday in the final round. The third event is scheduled to take place at the North Sound Golf Club on 13-14 Aug.

US basketball star Griner pleads guilty in Russian drug trial
WNBA star Brittney Griner, who is currently jailed in Russia, has pleaded guilty to drug possession, and smuggling during her trial in Moscow.
However, according to Russian news agencies and Reuters, Griner stated that she had no intention of committing a crime.
“I’d like to plead guilty but there was no intent. I didn’t want to break the law,” she said. “I was in a rush packing. And the cartridges accidentally ended up in my bag.”
