The Cayman Islands national under-14 football team finished play in the 2022 Caribbean Football Union Boys’ U14 Challenge Series on Thursday, 18 Aug., with mixed results.

The competition, held in the Dominican Republic, began on 13 Aug. and will finish on Sunday, 21 Aug.

However, after losing two matches and drawing two more, the Caymanian team did not advance from their group.

“We are all pleased with the performance of the team,” Alfredo Whittaker, president of the Cayman Islands Football Association told the Compass.

Cayman first played Grenada, where they came back to draw 2-2, with goals coming from Nazario Watson and Basil Scott. In their second match, Cayman drew yet again, this time with a 0-0 scoreline, against Martinique.

The Cayman team went on to play St. Martin, where they suffered their first defeat, losing 2-0. Cayman finished up their CFU competition against St. Lucia, losing 3-0.

Despite Cayman’s results, Whittaker said the team played well, considering the level of their opposition.

“We have young ballers here that are 11, some 12 years old,” he said. “We are quite happy to see our team playing, footballing and competing against much bigger boys… I think that’s what we need… to see where we are,” he explained.
