Cayman’s Sikh and South Asian community has raised $20,000 worth of food donations for the Cayman Food Bank following its first annual ‘Guru Nanak Gurpurab’ celebrations last Sunday.

“It was an outstanding success. We had great participation from the community at large,” Ishan Singh, a member of the Sikh & South Asian Community in Grand Cayman, told the Cayman Compass Thursday.
Guru Nanak Gurpurab is a festival that commemorates the birth of the founder of Sikhism, Guru Nanak Dev Ji, and is the largest celebration held by the Sikh community worldwide.

As part of the celebrations worldwide, food drives and various charity events are held in the founder’s honour.
“We were extremely pleased to see members of the Sikh and South Asian community in such large numbers attend the celebrations and contribute to the Food Drive. The first annual Guru Nanak Food Drive was a huge success. We look forward to making this an annual initiative,” Singh said.
He shared that not only was the community able to make a commitment of $20,000 worth of food items to the Cayman Food Bank, “but we also made a monetary contribution of CI $1,000 to the NCVO”.
“I am thankful to the entire Sikh and South Asian community and I look forward to additional positive contributions that the community will continue to make in Cayman,” he said.
An initial supply of food was already given to the Food Bank and a second supply is ready for delivery.
The Sikh community will be continuing to provide weekly deliveries to the Food Bank up to the pledged amount of $20,000.
The community plans to make food drive an annual event at their celebration.
