Children across the Cayman Islands are being invited to take part in a competition that will decide the colour scheme for three miniature traditional Caymanian cottages.
Volunteers removed the little houses earlier this year from the roadside in West Bay after a decade-and-a-half of the structures being ravaged by weather and neglect.
Resident Fiona Jackson galvanised interest in the tiny cottages and pulled together a group of volunteers to restore them.
David Smith, who built five original models to be used as planters across the district of West Bay, has joined forces with Jackson and her team of volunteers to rebuild the little houses. This time round, because the structures won’t be used as planters, he has put full roofs on them.
“David has done an amazing job on the houses,” Jackson said. “Now, we just need to paint them.”
And that’s where the children of Cayman come in.
Jackson has organised a colouring competition, in which the winners will not only have their colour scheme chosen for the restored houses, but will also win a variety of prizes. Up for grabs are 10 day passes for The Ritz-Carlton water park, a $50 voucher for Next Chapter from Chatterbox, and a $50 voucher for Book Nook, also from Chatterbox.
To enter the competition, visit ‘The Little House Project in Cayman’ Facebook page, and download and print the pictures of the cottages. Colour them in, take a photo of the finished work and post back to the Facebook page.
The competition closes on 16 Dec., and the winners will be announced on 23 Dec.
Jackson is also inviting schools to take part.
Once the winning designs are chosen, the houses, which were built from materials donated by A.L. Thompson’s, will be painted.
