Thousands of people gathered along Seven Mile Public Beach on Saturday 3 Dec. to be dazzled by the aerial acrobatics of the Cayman Islands Air Show.

The three-hour event featured a variety of aircraft dating back from World War II to more modern fighter jet-like planes that raced across the horizon, leaving trails of blue smoke before soaring into the sky, only to hurl back towards land.

Members of the RCIPS Air Support Unit were also on hand to demonstrate their dexterity while hovering and flying the two police helicopters less than a hundred feet above the sea.

This year’s show also featured sky-diving preforms by the Red Bull Air Force’s precision parachute team; US skydivers Team Fastrax; Kirby Chambliss, five-time US national aerobatics champion; Brazilian QYON AeroSports Team; and Skip Stewart’s Prometheus Pitts Display, among others.

The show marked the 70th anniversary of the landing of the first commercial plane at Owen Roberts International Airport.

It was initially scheduled to be held on the weekend of Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee, but was postponed due to inclement weather.

Following the show, members of the public were invited to see some of the aircraft as part of a wider tour at Owen Roberts International Airport.
