The massive snowstorm hitting the United States and Canada has led to the cancellation of several flights into Cayman.

Four flights, from Atlanta, Newark, New York and Toronto, and their return departure legs from Cayman, were cancelled Sunday, while three flights, from Charlotte, Toronto and New York, were cancelled Monday.

Thousands of flights from airports across the US and Canada have been cancelled, as a result of heavy snow, sleet and freezing rain brought by the storm.

The Associated Press news agency, quoting statistics from the flight tracker flightaware.com, said some 11,000 flights were cancelled on Sunday and more than 14,000 delayed. Airports in Philadelphia, Washington, Baltimore, North Carolina, New York and New Jersey were hit especially hard.

Flight Aware on Monday reported there were 3,878 flights cancelled within, into or out of the US.

“It is a unique storm in the sense that it is so widespread,” US National Weather Service meteorologist Allison Santorelli told Associated Press. “It was affecting areas all the way from New Mexico, Texas, all the way into New England, so we’re talking like a 2,000 mile spread.”

US President Donald Trump had approved emergency declarations for at least a dozen states by Saturday.

As of Sunday morning, about 213 million people were under some sort of winter weather warning, Santorelli said.
