More than 1,500 runners, joggers and walkers gathered by Public Beach in the pre-dawn darkness on Sunday, ready to take part in the annual Stride Against Cancer.

The event is one of the biggest fundraising walk/runs on island.

Clad in white T-shirts with the distinctive Stride logo across the front, participants had the option to take part in three different events – a half-marathon, which started at 5:30am, and a 10K and 5K, which began at 6am.

Dave O’Driscoll, operations manager at the Cayman Islands Cancer Society, commended all those who turned out to either walk or run the route from Public Beach to the Wharf restaurant and back, as well as the small army of volunteers who manned water stations, directed participants where to go and offered encouragement to the participants.

“There were 1,500 on West Bay Road, with hundreds more walking remotely, even off island, as well as over 100 at the North Side Stride,” O’Driscoll said.

“The Cayman National Stride Against Cancer goes from stride to stride, from strength to strength, increasing awareness for early detection and prevention of cancers in our community, while raising vital funds to support our programmes helping patients and survivors,” O’Driscoll said.

“We’re so proud of our striders, our volunteers, and all the sponsors who made this amazing event possible.”

The winner of the half marathon was Esmond Brown, with a time of 1 hour, 21.39 seconds, followed by Abraham Whittaker and George O’Brien. In the women’s half-marathon category, Jalene Cruz crossed the finish line first, with Courtney Fung in second place and Emily Clark in third.
