More than 150 cancer survivors gathered for an evening of celebration, hope and inspiration last week at an annual dinner organised by the Cayman Islands Cancer Society.
The event, at the Marriott Beach Resort on 4 June, had a ‘Night at the Hollywood Awards’ theme, where survivors were honoured with symbolic awards that recognised their strength, resilience and determination in the face of adversity.
Organisers described it as an evening “filled with laughter, tears and standing ovations”.
The keynote speech was delivered by Shadden McLaughlin, a two-time cancer survivor and long-time fundraising champion for the Cancer Society, who shared her story of perseverance and advocacy.
Dr. Vikas Roshan, radiation oncologist at Health City Cayman Islands, which sponsored the evening, in his remarks acknowledged the progress made in cancer care while reinforcing the continued need for early detection, comprehensive treatment and community support, a press release on the event noted.
“This event is about honouring the courage of our survivors and reminding them – and all of us – that there is strength in community,” said Rebekah Brooks, chair of the Cayman Islands Cancer Society, in the release.
She added, “Shadden’s words reminded us of the deep personal strength it takes to walk this path, and we’re so thankful to Health City for standing alongside us as partners in both care and compassion.”
Dave O’Driscoll, head of operations of the Cancer Society, noted that the Survivors Dinner remains one of the most meaningful events in the charity’s calendar.
“Seeing so many faces in the room – survivors, supporters, medical professionals – it’s a testament to the power of partnership and perseverance,” he said.
