Officer in court over death of police dog

K9 Baron died in the police kennels.

Police Officer Timothy Alexander Munroe appeared before the Summary Court to face a single charge of cruelty to an animal in relation to the death of police dog Baron.

No real progress was made during the brief court hearing on Tuesday, 14 Feb., as the prosecution did not have the file in hand.

“The position is that Mr. Munroe will remain charged under the current statute, but we are seeking to amend the particulars of the offence,” said prosecutor Kenneth Ferguson, who didn’t disclose the particulars of the offence.

Munroe, who was top of his recruitment class, has been an officer with the RCIPS since graduating in March 2021.

K9 Baron, who died in July 2022, was described in the Compass story about his death as a “fearless service dog in the line of duty” that helped to sniff out drugs, track down property and apprehend suspects.

When news of the animal’s death became public, it was met with anger and prompted an investigation by the Ombudsman’s Office and the Department of Agriculture’s Animal Welfare Unit.

No pleas were entered and Munroe was released on bail. His next appearance is slated for 28 Feb.
