Trial date set in police-dog death case

K9 Baron died in the police kennels.

Police officer Timothy Munroe is expected to stand trial for a charge of cruelty to an animal in June this year, in relation to police K9 Baron. The dog died in July last year while in the policeman’s care.

The charge against Munroe does not allege that his actions led to the animal’s death, instead he is accused of causing unnecessary suffering to Baron by failing to provide the animal with proper shelter, food and water.

On Tuesday, 24 Feb., Munroe entered a not guilty plea. On Thursday, 16 March, a single-day Summary Court trial was set for 28 June.

Munroe, who graduated at the top of his recruitment class, has been an officer with the RCIPS since March 2021.

When news of the animal’s death became public, it was met with anger and prompted an investigation by the Ombudsman’s Office and the Department of Agriculture’s Animal Welfare Unit.
