The Breast Cancer Foundation had a record turnout for its annual Light Up The Night beach walk on Saturday, 4 March, with over 1,500 participants on the books before registration closed.
Everyone was sporting pink branded T-shirts and flashing bracelets, with many carrying reusable lit batons as they started off from Seven Mile Public Beach just after sunset. They walked to The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman – the turnaround point – and returned to public beach for the raffle draw.
Governor Martyn Roper and his wife Elisabeth, who have always attended the walk, showed up once again to show their support. It was particularly poignant for them and the crowd, as this would be the last LUTN for them before they leave the Cayman Islands at the end of March. Roper spoke of how important the work of the foundation was in assisting those fighting breast cancer, adding that he was happy to see so many people signing up this year.
One of the directors of the foundation, Kim Lund, also noted the record number of registrations and announced that Dart had made a pledge to match the amount raised up to $30,000, which was greeted with enthusiastic applause.
