The first men’s game on Sunday, 12 March, saw an in-form Western Gaels meet an out-of-form Wolfe Tones. The Western Gaels are league contenders and showed it here with Jan-George van Wyk once again outstanding and Conor Byrne scoring 1-6. Wolfe Tones replied with 5 points from Kevin Falvey but they lost their fourth game in a row to continue their descent down the table. The final score was 2-7 to 0-5.
In the next match, Cavan Gaels and Shamrocks were in action. Both teams would have had title aspirations before this game, but the Cavan Gaels outclassed the Shamrocks in this one. Martin Pacaud got two early goals for the Gaels and after he added his third in the second half, the game was over. Shamrocks struggled to make much impact up front against a strong, experienced Gaels defence, eventually losing 3-3 to 0-3.
Claremont and Éire Óg was the last men’s match. Both teams played their part in an open, free-scoring contest, which could not have been predicted based on previous evidence. The over-40s, boosted by the acquisition of Kirk’s finest, Tom Sheahan, in the top-up draft, showed you can teach old dogs new tricks, as their total of 1-10 was a season high for them. Debutants Caolan Reilly and Oisin Farrell impressed for Éire Óg, racking up 5 points between them, but the team’s score of 1-7 meant they lost by 3.
