Two charges of indecent assault against West Bay West MP McKeeva Bush have been transferred to the Grand Court at his request following a brief appearance before the Summary Court on Tuesday, 28 March.
Bush also face two counts of common assault. All the charges stem from the same incident during which he is alleged to have assaulted two women while at a government function in September 2022.
This is the third time that the veteran politician has appeared before the Summary Court in these matters. During his appearances both today and last week, he was seen using a walker, due to an unexplained illness.
The charge of indecent assault is a Category B offence, an electable charge which means it is a matter that can be dealt with in either the Grand Court, where Bush now has the right to a jury trial if he enters a not guilty plea, or Summary Court, with a judge-alone trial.
“I am also using my discretionary powers to transfer the remaining two counts of common assault to Grand Court as well, where both sets of matters will be dealt with at the same time,” said Magistrate Vanessa Allard, who presided over the matter.
Bush was released on $950 bail, which requires him to reside at his West Bay address and not to contact either of the alleged victims. He next returns to court on 14 April.
At the time of the alleged incidents, Bush was Speaker of the House, which prompted public criticism and calls for his resignation.
