The Department of Lands and Survey is temporarily waiving the $50 application fee to update and rectify land register information until the end of July.

Out-of-date land register information has been blamed for some residents not receiving notification letters by registered mail about planned developments in their neighbourhoods. The issue was highlighted in West Bay recently when local residents said they had not been notified about a planning application for a 192-rental-apartment complex on Batabano Road, which has already been approved.

In a number of Central Planning Authority meetings in recent years, it has been noted that people who say they would have objected to planning applications missed the opportunity to do so because they had not received notification letters. If the mailing address connected with their land registration has not been updated, then will not receive the letters. Updating that information, or any other details, on the land register comes with a $50 fee.

Director of Lands and Survey, Uche Obi, said in a statement Wednesday, “We understand that details on the land register may be outdated due to a variety of reasons, including people moving, use of a new mailing address, change of name [by] way of marriage, deed poll or otherwise.”

He said the waiver of fees, introduced to coincide with the department’s 50th anniversary, had been approved by Cabinet.

He added that this was a “great opportunity to ensure that your land register is up-to-date and accurate which is extremely important as it can lead to savings in time and money”.

The department noted in its statement, “Having your correct name and accurate address on the Land [Registry] is crucial for property owners. It can help to improve communication, provide legal protection, make property transactions easier, avoid delays and protect against fraud.”

The waiver period came into effect on 2 May, and will end on 30 July 2023.
