Proudly representing the Cayman Islands, ultra runner Kerri Kanuga finished fourth overall in the 100-mile race from Key Largo to Key West, at the Keys100 held 20-21 May.

The 53-year-old realtor placed third among women participants out of a total field of 184 male and female competitors. Kanuga clocked in at 22 hours and 11 seconds, with first-place finisher Andy Day crossing the line at 18:20:35.

Reflecting on that run, she said she did Cayman proud in conditions described as hot and humid, adding that she couldn’t have done it without the help of her crew member Sarah Hough, who helped her every step of the way.

“She worked harder than I did,” Kanuga told the Compass. “Most crews are three or four people. She did everything by herself – from making sure I was hydrated and ate, to keeping me from not getting lost.”

It was the second distance race that she had completed in the last six months, having finished the Daytona 100 in December, for which she was ranked sixth in the world by Ultra Running magazine for her age group in 2022.

Her results in the Florida Keys last month qualified her to represent Cayman at the 153-mile Spartathlon in Greece this September.

Prior to that, she will compete at the 135-mile Badwater135 in Death Valley, California, on 4 July – an event she has finished in the top 10 five times.
