Architect plans for a new government high school and gymnasium on Cayman Brac have been submitted to the Department of Planning for public viewing.

The drawings show a large campus built on the west side of a 59-acre Crown-owned plot which is bisected by Sunshine Drive in the centre of the Sister Island.

The Ministry of Education is yet to release further details on the timeline or cost of construction, but anyone who wishes to inspect the drawings can do so up until 21 Aug.

A close look at the plans reveals a T-shaped two-storey school building to the south of the site, containing classrooms, offices, storage, bathrooms, a library, a kitchen and a dining hall.

Speciality classrooms include a design and technology workshop, a home economics kitchen, and a technical and vocational education and training workshop.

There is also a visual arts studio, several science labs, information and communications technology rooms, a steel pan room and a music practice room.

To the north, a rectangular single-storey building contains a large gymnasium, lockers, bathrooms, kitchenette, first aid room, laundry, storage, offices and a dance hall.

Two more single-storey buildings appear to be accommodation blocks connected to an existing multi-purpose hall to the east of Cayman Brac Sports Complex and Public Pool.

They contain 38 en-suite rooms, laundry, social rooms and kitchenettes.

The drawings, on the Department of Planning website, also include two outdoor sports courts, planting, driveways and more than 100 parking spaces.

In August 2022, the government approved a business case for a new high school to replace the ageing Layman E Scott High School off Foster Road on the north coast of the island.

At the time, Education Minister Juliana O’Connor-Connolly said the government had acquired land next to Cayman Brac Sports Complex for the school and accommodation.

An independent outline business case which evaluates the best value-for-money option for the school was due to begin on 1 Sept. last year.

The Compass is not aware of any public update since then.

Layman E Scott High School opened in January 1967, and was first known as the Cayman Brac Secondary Modern School.

It was later renamed Cayman Brac High School, and then in 2011, it was given the name Layman E. Scott in memory of its first principal.

The Compass has reached out to the Ministry of Education for further details on the new school project and is awaiting a response.
