John Ferguson’s collection of Cayman Islands licence plates won him a first place prize at the annual international Automobile License Plate Collectors Association in Denver, Colorado recently.

Ferguson travelled from his home in West Bay, Grand Cayman, to Denver with his display of plates that included all examples of the earliest vehicle plates dating back to 1962, as well as a large collection of bicycle plates, the oldest being from 1957.

All of the plates were mounted on core foam boards with a big graphic banner featuring iconic Cayman images, including a stingray, turtles, a Cayman parrot, Cayman Airways newest plane, the Cayman Islands flag and coat of arms, and a QR code for the Cayman Airways website.

As usual at the conventions he attends, Ferguson ensured that he had a supply of rum cake samples on offer for those who wanted to get a taste of Cayman.

More than 50 international collections were on display at the event, which featured more than 430 collectors from the United States and around the world.

  1. Well done! I think the Department of Vehicle Licensing should now, in light of his celebrity status and the fame he has brought to the Cayman Islands, reconsider its decision of not allowing him to have old license plates. He used to be allowed to get old plates that would have been thrown away. Now they destroy them instead of allowing him to promote our islands and make works of art from them.
