Cayman Islands golfer Justin Hastings claimed a historic victory for his school – San Diego State University – at the Mirabel Maui Jim Intercollegiate on Sunday, 10 Sept., in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Hastings, a junior, shot a final-round 3-under-par 68 at the par-71, 7,118-yard Mirabel Golf Club against 74 other competitors, to finish at 18-under for the tournament, an overall 195 – the best 54-hole score ever from a golfer from San Diego State.

The 195 marked a personal best for Hastings, shaving off five strokes from his previous 54-hole low of 202, and beating Alex Kang’s school record of 197, accomplished at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational in 2010.

“It feels amazing to win the Maui Jim Intercollegiate,” Hastings told the Compass. “It is a tournament I have played in twice now, and it is one of my favourites throughout our schedule.

“To be able to win it at such a low score feels fantastic and gives me a lot of confidence for the long year ahead of me.”
