The annual Hannah’s Heroes Big Shave will be held on 29 Sept. this year, when shiny newly-shorn bald heads will abound and the community comes out in force to raise funds to fight childhood cancer.

Organisers are inviting people to sign up to shave their heads at the 11th annual event in Cricket Square.

“If bald is not for you, then please encourage your work colleagues, friends, family, neighbours to take the plunge and get a life changing hair cut and, of course, remind them that the hair grows back,” the organisers said in a press release.

They added, “Alternatively you can organise a dress down day or a bake sale at work or simply make a donation if shaving’s not for you – every dollar makes a difference.”

The Big Shave was first organised in honour of Hannah Meeson, daughter of Cayman residents Gaylene and Nigel Meeson, who was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2012 when she was just 4 years old.

The event is the biggest single overseas fundraiser for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, the largest private funder of childhood cancer research. The foundation has been operating since 2005, during which time it has donated more than US$332 million in funding for research grants to more than 358 institutions in 31 countries.

Since 2013, when the first Hannah’s Heroes Big Shave was held, more than US$2.9 million has been raised for St. Baldrick’s. That money has been used to fund promising childhood cancer research, including 14 individual research grants at some of the most prestigious research institutes across the US.

Throughout September, which is designated as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, customers at Foster’s supermarket and Priced Right locations can round up their total to the nearest dollar to make a donation when checking out.
