Newly formed Hurricane Lee expected to strengthen

After rapidly intensifying from a tropical wave to a tropical storm and now to a hurricane, Lee continues to gain momentum, with regional and local forecasters warning this storm is likely to become a major hurricane in fewer than 48 hours.

Hurricane Lee poses no immediate threat to the Cayman Islands.

As of 5pm on 6 Sept., Hurricane Lee was still a Category 1 storm with winds of 75 miles per hour and travelling in a west-northwesterly direction at 14 mph.

The latest predictions have shown a northerly shift in direction, which has taken the Windward Islands out of the predicted storm path.

According to the US-based National Hurricane Center, Hurricane Lee is likely to generate swells that could reach “portions of the Lesser Antilles on Friday, and the British and US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico this weekend,” which could cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.

Forecasters are also watching two other tropical waves in the Eastern Caribbean – one off the coast of Africa, and the other near the Azores. Neither of these systems is expected to develop into tropical depressions within the next week.
