Cayman Arts Festival will present an evening of flamenco dance featuring world-renowned choreographer and professional dancer Miguel Vargas at the Harquail Theatre, on Wednesday, 8 Nov.
Vargas is the artistic director of Miguel Vargas Flamenco Dance Theatre and CEO of the Centro de Arte y Flamenco de Sevilla, a “prestigious institution dedicated to the teaching and promotion of Flamenco,” according to a CAF press release.
For 28 years, Vargas has travelled to more than 33 countries, performing in theatres such as New York’s Lincoln Center and the Royal Opera of Muskat. In 2006, he founded the Center of Art and Flamenco of Seville, which trains and educates students in flamenco.
In 2010, he founded his own company, the Miguel Vargas Flamenco Dance Theatre. In 2022, he appeared on the Italian TV reality show ‘Quelle Brave Ragazze’, together with Italian celebrities Mara Maionchi, Orietta Berti and Sandra Milo. Earlier this year, he featured in the movie ‘La Singla’ which was recently shown at the Malaga Film Festival. Throughout his career, Vargas taught more than 10,000 students.
“For me, flamenco is my way of existing, my way of feeling, of expressing all my passion,” Vargas said in a CAF press release. “In my dance, I can say with my body everything that I cannot explain with words, and each movement has a meaning.”
A spiritual journey
Vargas said life taught him how to dance, and dancing taught him how to live. “Every time I go on stage, for me, it becomes a spiritual journey, a divine revelation, in which I experience singular, unique and unrepeatable moments.
“There is only me with my naked soul and my open heart. I close my eyes and listen to the song of my ancestors that twists my soul or perhaps fills me with the joy of living, and I do the dance of my life. In these moments, my mind dissolves and I am free of my own thoughts and all my concentration is on the reality of the present moment. I enter an alert state of consciousness.”
Vargas will be accompanied by his group of Flamenco performers, which includes his sons, David Fernandez (singer) and Miguel Fernandez (percussionist), as well as flamenco fusion dancer El Sembrao, and guitarist Juan Anguita.
“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all those who have played a vital role in making this CAF event possible,” said Marius Gaina, the festival’s executive director.
“The introduction of such a remarkable dance production to the Cayman Islands is a significant milestone for us, and we are elated to welcome dancers of such caliber to our shores,” he said in the release.
