Inspired by the rare ghost orchid of Grand Cayman, Tedrick Green has created a new fragrance to add to his collection of perfumes, diffusers and candles that aromatically evoke his homeland.

Listed among the 100 most threatened species in the world, the ghost orchid, scientifically known as Dendrophylax fawcettii, blooms annually in late April/early May, its pale cream-coloured blossoms falling against a leafy backdrop, and thrives mainly in the remaining six acres of the Ironwood Forest in George Town.

Green recalled his journey to creating the Ghost Orchid eau de parfum.

“I was raised by very strong women,” he said in a video on his social media pages. “I have sisters, aunts, who are absolutely fearless, and sometimes looking back you wonder how they did what they did, how they raised me, how they nurtured other people. They really weren’t… supported in a lot of ways, so the idea was to create something that I could use to help empower women.”

Green creates authentic fragrances inspired by the exotic flora of his homeland, marketed under his Ted Green brand.

“I went on a search to find flowers for inspiration, so I needed to find something to help bolster this inspiration, and through research and conversations, the [ghost] orchid came across my path.”

Due to its rare origin, “once I came across it, I knew that this is what I’ve been looking for, this was… the floral inspiration that I needed to build the scent off of,” he said.

The “distinctive and playful scent” carries the notes of “lychee, bergamot, nutmeg, Haitian Vetiver, cashmere, and rose” according to his description of the fragrance.

Green chose the ghost orchid for his latest fragrance “mainly because it represents the Caribbean woman, and also to develop something that is exotic, empowering, captivating and sexy”.

Finding the orchid was the easy part, Green chuckled, noting “the hard part was how to bottle something so majestic; how do you bottle it in the way that the emotion I was trying to [convey], carries?”

A two-year creative process culminated in the official launch of Ghost Orchid at an intimate event held at The Loft in Compass Centre, on Saturday, 21 Jan.

Green addresses the gathering after showing the Ghost Orchid promotional video.

During the launch, Green shared insights into his entrepreneurial journey and the creation of Ghost Orchid, with guests treated to samples of the fragrance.

“We were looking to use scent to really drive our stories, drive our culture, empower our people, and it’s just so exciting after so long to be able to share something new,” Green said in the video.

His first foray into fragrances was the Banana Orchid, a dual release with Fifteen O Three launched in 2010, followed by Cayman Candy.

He created his fragrance brand in 2007, as a pet project, which eventually led to a Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2015. Green said his success is a “testament” to his love of fine fragrances and exotic flora that evolved into a strong brand name.

His product line has blossomed into an expanded selection of scented candles and reed diffusers, sold across Grand Cayman and through the official Ted Green website.

When it comes to his creations, his goal has always been to empower women, he said. “When women sprayed this, how do I want them to feel? I wanted them to feel powerful, on top of the world, rich, whatever their social status is. I wanted this fragrance to make them feel absolutely invincible, sexy, alluring.”
