A new three-lane walking and athletics track was declared open at the government’s Creek Primary School in Cayman Brac on Friday, 19 Jan.
The oval asphalt track spans a circumference of 200 metres in adherence to IAAF World Athletics Series standards, according to a Ministry of Education press release.
At the launch event, Premier Juliana O’Connor-Connolly, who also acts as education minister, said the track’s benefits extend beyond the school.
“This track isn’t just for Creek Primary; it’s for everyone,” she said. “We have purchased an adjacent parcel of land to construct an access-way for community members.
“And once the public access-way is completed, the track will serve as a gathering place, a competition ground, a space for the community to connect.”

The premier added that work has begun on a similar track at West End Primary School, also in Cayman Brac.
“We’re building a network of opportunity, an archipelago of athletic dreams, where every child has a chance to shine,” O’Connor-Connolly said.
During opening remarks, Lyneth Monteith, acting chief officer in the Ministry of Education, highlighted the track’s importance as not just a space for physical education and sports.
It is also “a springboard for student engagement, a catalyst for health and wellbeing, a sanctuary for unearthing hidden athletic potential, and a bridge to stronger bonds with the rest of the Cayman Brac community,” she said.
Cayman Brac physical education teacher Lavender Bryan spoke about the importance of physical fitness and the track’s potential to foster a lifelong love of exercise.
And Creek Primary School principal Margaret Juman delivered a vote of thanks.
Also at the event were MP for Cayman Brac West and Little Cayman, Moses Kirkconnell, Deputy District Commissioner Chelsea Whittaker, government representatives, staff, students, parents and community members.
Scott’s Development and the Public Works Department constructed the track.
