The Department of Environmental Health is advising the public to refrain from using affected products in the latest recall notice from the Quaker Oats Company.
On Friday, the company expanded the recall of a number of its products due to the potential presence of salmonella, which now include some Quaker Granola and Cereals Bars, Cereals, Cap’n Crunch Instant Oatmeal, Gatorade Protein Peanut Butter Chocolate Protein Bars, Munchies Snack Mix and Snack Boxes.
The recall was issued due to the health risk that salmonella poses, which may lead to illness if consumed.
The announcement of the recall was made by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and is the third notice issued in recent weeks.
All local wholesalers and supermarkets have been contacted by DEH Environmental Health Officers regarding the recall, a statement from the DEH said.
“Measures have been implemented by the DEH to ensure that the affected products are not offered for sale to the public. Consumers are advised to refrain from using the affected product and properly dispose of them or return any unopened packages to the place of purchase. Consumers can scan the SmartLabel QR code on the product package to determine if it has been recalled,” the statement added.
DEH is encouraging anyone who has become ill from the consumption of any of the items to contact their medical provider immediately.
Consumption of food contaminated with salmonella can cause salmonellosis, one of the most common bacterial foodborne illnesses.
The most common symptoms of salmonellosis are diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 12 to 72 hours after eating the contaminated product, the statement said.
“The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days. Most people recover without treatment. In some persons, however, the diarrhea may be so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized. Older adults, infants, and persons with weakened immune systems are more likely to develop severe illness. Individuals who are concerned about related illness should contact their health care provider,” it added.
The previous notice, which was issued early last week, advised against the consumption of 14.5oz Quaker Oatmeal Squares Cinnamon; 14.5oz Quaker Oatmeal Squares Brown Sugar; and boxes containing 12 1.23oz Quaker Chewy Granola Bars Yogurt Strawberry Flavor.
Each of these affected items have best-before dates between 11 Jan. 2024 and 1 Oct. 2024.
The earlier recall included all sizes of Chewy Classic and 25% less sugar Granola Bars, Chewy Dipps Granola Bars, Big Chewy Bars, Quaker Simply Granola and Quaker Granola Cereals. Some of those products may be included in Frito Lay Multi-Packs, the company noted.
A detailed list of product names and images can be found on the Quaker site.
