Kesley Martinez Ebanks has been sentenced to four years and nine months in prison by the Grand Court for a head-on collision that claimed the life of a woman and injured three other people.
Ebanks, who pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving on Friday, 15 Sept., was remanded into custody following a brief sentencing appearance on Thursday, 8 Feb.
The incident happened just after 1am on 23 May 2021, when two cars travelling in opposite directions on South Church Street collided near Palm Springs condos.
Kiarah Shikale Perkins, 32, a US national who had arrived in Cayman one month prior to the accident, was employed as a nurse here. Perkins, who was driving a Honda Fit, was fatally injured in the crash and pronounced dead upon arrival at Cayman Islands Hospital.
Ebanks, who was driving a Changan CS75, and three other occupants of the vehicles were hospitalised.
Initially, Ebanks denied the original charges of causing death by dangerous driving, and causing grievous bodily harm. But months ahead of that trial, he changed his plea to guilty on a single charge of causing death by dangerous driving.
In addition to his sentence, Ebanks has also been disqualified from driving for five years, which is set to commence upon his release from prison.
