A vessel carrying four men landed in Spot Bay, Cayman Brac Tuesday around 5:30am, according to Cayman Islands Customs and Border Control. The passengers, now in CBC custody, are being processed by authorities.
CBC did not specify the men’s origin but shared an image of a hand-built, wooden boat, typical of asylum seekers fleeing Cuba.
The landing comes less than a week after CBC reported a vessel carrying seven people sighted off Queens Highway, East End, and amid a significant exodus of people from Cuba. That vessel, spotted 8 May, was allowed to continue on its journey westward off Cobalt Coast, West Bay.
“CBC and their partner agencies responded to the scene and the vessel with all male migrants expressed that they wanted to continue on their journey,” the service said in a press release on Friday.
“The vessel was monitored by CBC from land until it was outside the line of sight.”
In response to the continued and massive movements of people in the region, Cabinet also approved $2.4 million in funding this month for a “detention facility” with the capacity to house more than 300 “irregular migrants” – government’s term for the mostly Cuban refugees arriving in Cayman by boat.
